Oakland’s Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther breaks box officer records

Film director and screenwriter Ryan Coogler is seeing major success with his blockbuster Marvel Comics film Black Panther.  Coogler, a native of Oakland, CA gained critical acclaim after his first feature film; Fruitvale Station – the story of Oscar Grant, a young black man killed by Bay Area Transit police in 2009.

Black Panther topped the weekend box office with over 235M in ticket sales; making the film, the biggest February debut of all time, and the top-grossing movie ever by a black director.

The film, starring Howard University alum, Chadwick Boseman as (T’Chella/Black , Panther) is based on the Marvel comic book Black Panther and set in the fictional African nation of Wakanda.
